Questions Wanted

Please remember to send in your Michigan Football Recruiting questions and I will answer them in a new post I have made called "Brice's Recruiting Mailbag". Just go to my contact or just leave me a comment underneath. Don't forget to check out the Michigan Recruiting War Room, which you can interact with other recruiting fans too.

2012 CO OG Alex Kozan has signed with Auburn over Michigan and Iowa. Michigan was in position to get him and losing on him does hurt, but not as much with the 2013 haul that will be coming in now.

First come, first serve

Brady Hoke coming in wasn't a huge name like Urban Meyer and many people had questions on his recruiting game and what his strategy would be to secure the top prospects. After two recruiting classes, he is working on his third class and the results this staff have gotten has been amazing. After signing a full class of 25 for the 2012 class that was pretty much wrapped up before the first game of the season, Michigan could pretty much zone in on their top targets up until Signing Day. The end result of the 2012 class was a consensus top 10 class from all recruiting networks. How did Hoke do this for his first full recruiting class at Michigan, you ask?

Hoke attacked the Midwest and hit it hard early and often. He dominated the state of Michigan and made a impact in Ohio after landing Ohio's prize talent in OH OT Kyle Kalis. He didn't just do his damage around the Midwest, but went coast to coast looking for the top talent. One thing that most Michigan fans aren't accustomed to was his approach in recruiting, but it was effective. He had most of his class filled up quickly just after a few months in the process and many thought it was starting to look like first come, first serve if you wanted a spot in this class. Now for the 2013 class, Hoke is using the same approach again, but this time it is a lot more effective. Michigan currently has 13 commits in the 2013 class and it is not even March yet!

How did this come to be that Michigan has so many commits this early in the process? Well, here are a few examples of how I see Hoke's approach to recruiting affecting a few prospects that eventually committed to the Wolverines. First come, first serve ladies and gentlemen!

IL OT Logan Tuley-Tillman- Tuley-Tillman was a top target for Michigan and gave him lots of attention early and often. He came up to Ann Arbor multiple times and came away impressed. It seemed like this big man would be a lock for the Wolverines, but when many offers started to pour in, then it seemed an early decision looked out of the question. Linemen started to commit rapidly in one weekend and the pressure was on. It looked like Michigan would only take five offensive linemen and with limited spots left, what would he do? Would he wait like many thought he was going to do or pull the trigger early? Boom! He committed making him the fourth offensive linemen in the class and securing a spot in this class for sure.

CO OG Chris Fox- Fox had been on Michigan's radar for awhile and happen to camp at Michigan. Many thought to think that Michigan had a early lead, but nothing huge. It also didn't hurt he had family here too, but with him seeing his offers go up and his ranking flying up, it didn't seem like he would make a decision this early in the process. During the commit frenzy weekend, most of the prospects making the commitments were on campus, but possibly hearing about the flurry of commits especially to the O-Line made him rethink his timeline and decided he couldn't wait any longer.

PA OG Patrick Kugler- Kugler didn't really seem to be hot on Michigan for most of his recruitment, but he decided to take a visit to Ann Arbor. He came away extremely impressed and it shot Michigan up his list. Michigan at the time when he visited only look to have one more spot for another offensive linemen. With many other targets left on the board and him knowing his opportunity to be a Wolverine was slim if he decided to gamble to wait, he committed to Michigan soon after.

Kugler joins the Michigan commit train!

New Commit: Patrick Kugler
High School- North Allegheny SHS, in Wexford, Pennsylvania
Height- 6-4
Weight- 270
Forty Time- Not reported
Position- OG
Offers- Arizona, Boise State, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida State, Maryland, Miami FL, Michigan State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Stanford, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia

Game Breakdown-
With no highlights of Kulger, I cannot give a breakdown on his game. You can see what Scout.com says of his game, here.

How recruiting looks now- Kugler makes it commit #13 and the fifth offensive linemen commit in this class. I don't see Michigan taking another offensive linemen unless it is a super highly touted linemen, then maybe. This is amazing how Michigan is racking up the commitments and now I think Michigan will have about 7-9 spots left to give depending on attrition. I think Michigan will start to really recruit the skill positions hard. Here is the official word from Kugler himself of his commitment below in his tweet.

2-24-12 Recruiting Nuggets

The first thing in my recruiting nuggets is an update of new highlights from, guess who, Shane Morris. Here is MI QB commit, Shane Morris's newest football highlights.

MI OT Steven Elmer is committed to Notre Dame, but recently there were reports he was looking around and he might actually flip to Michigan. Sam Webb shut those reports down real quick with this tweet. Move along.

OH LB Mike McCary hasn't been on the radar for Michigan fans, but is starting to become a real target. Some of our newest commits are even starting to join Shane Morris on the recruiting trail like OH DE Taco Charlton from this tweet and OH WR Jaron Dukes from this tweet.

VA LB E.J. Levenberry is another one of the top linebackers in the nation, but was already on most Michigan recruiting fans radar. Now, Michigan leads for the talented linebacker. A good read, but one thing to note is this race is no where near over.

IL OT Kyle Bosch committed to Michigan over last weekend to start a snow ball effect of seven other commits. TomVH of WolverineNation posted this tweet of Bosch and his family being all in!

PA OG Patrick Kuger recently made it up to Ann Arbor and it seemed to have felt a very good impression on him. The only question is will this move up his timeline to decide now because spots are limited.

Dukes goes blue!

New Commit: Jaron Dukes
High School- Marion-Franklin HS, in Columbus, Ohio
Height- 6-4
Weight- 200
Forty Time- Not reported
Position- WR
Offers- Illinois and Toledo

Game Breakdown-
Dukes is a big, physical, and strong wide receiver. He is not someone that will blaze by you, but will out jump you for the ball. He catches the ball very well and according to Sam Webb's tweet is talented and coachable.

How recruiting looks now- Dukes is the first wide receiver in this class and is commit #12. Coming into the recruiting of the 2013 class, wide receiver was a position to emphasize on the recruiting trail for sure. Michigan looks to be taking 2-3 in the class and with this commitment from Dukes, it could speed up some prospects decisions like IL WR Laquon Treadwell. They will probably look to attack on the recruiting trail the skill positions next like wide receiver, running back, and possibly another tight end if the coaches want one.

February 20 Best Guess Recruiting List

Here is my first 2013 best guess list of what I think the class is going to look like. It will change over time with players being added and dropped. Remember recruiting is a marathon and not a sprint. Tell me what you think.

1. QB: Shane Morris (Michigan Commit)

2. FB/RB: Wyatt Shallman (Michigan Commit)

3. RB: Ty Isaac (Michigan jumped in his recruitment very early and have built good a strong relationship with him. He has already been on campus and it looks like Michigan has pin him as a top priority.)

4. RB: DeVeon Smith (Smith is a big bruising back that Michigan would like and has offered early. Michigan being his first offer is something that left a good impact on him. In my opinion, Michigan will be very hard to beat and he will fit this new system great.)

5. WR: Jaron Dukes (Once Dukes was offered, well let's just say he really really really liked it. Michigan looks hard to beat in this race and I think it is just a matter of time until he is apart of this class.)

6. WR: Laquon Treadwell (Just like with Isaac, Michigan was on Treadwell early and has maintain a high level of interest for him. He has already on the campus a few times and has built a relationship with QB commit, Shane Morris.)

7. TE: Jake Butt (Michigan Commit)

8. TE: Khalid Hill (Michigan Commit)

9. OL: David Dawson (Michigan Commit)

10. OL: Chris Fox (Michigan Commit)

11. OL: Kyle Bosch (Michigan Commit)

12. OL: Logan Tuley-Tillman (Michigan Commit)

13. OL: Ethan Pocic (Pocic was the lone prospect to be standing after this last weekend, which produce eight commits. I think that commit frenzy made him take notice of what is happening in Ann Arbor. He didn't commit, but it did help Michigan's chances. I don't see him committing soon for those wondering.)

14. DT: Henry Poggi (Poggi is one the most talented defensive tackles in the nation and most of the country is after him. With all that in mind, Michigan has been able to get him already on campus a few times. He will be very hard to get, but Michigan has already made a good impression.)

15. DT: Kenton Gibbs (Gibbs goes to Cass Tech H.S., which has been a pipeline to Michigan recently and they already have two of his teammates committed with David Dawson and Jourdan Lewis. I think he will have a good senior season leading to a late offer from Michigan and he will jump on it.)

16. DE: Taco Charlton (Michigan Commit)

17. DE: Luke Maclean (Michigan has one of his former teammates on the team already with Justice Hayes and I see his recruitment to start to really heat up this summer. I think this could be a fun in-state battle to watch if both programs offer and I think they will.)

18. LB: Ben Gedeon (Another kid that Michigan was early on and it has made an good impact. It also helps Michigan has got him to camp last year and come up to the BBQ at the Big House. With Ohio State offering it seems like they don't want to have another Joe Bolden situation, where they didn't offer a very talented player in-state and it came to bite them in the butt. Michigan is in good position, though.)

19. LB: E.J. Levenberry (Levenberry is one of the top linebackers and one of the top players in the nation. Michigan is in his top three after a raving report that came from an unofficial visit he made earlier. For Michigan to stay up near the top, then they will need to get him back up to campus and I see this being a battle to the end for Levenberry.)

20. CB: Gareon Conley (Michigan was his first offer and is the tall physical corner they are looking for in this class. He is not a very well known prospect, but if he has a good senior year, then I think his recruitment could really take off. Michigan is in good shape for Conley.)

21. CB: Jourdan Lewis (Michigan Commit)

22. S: Dymonte Thomas (Michigan Commit)
